Telling them apart
Gong bath or sound bath? The difference
A gong bath is a sound bath with a gong at the centre of it. Mine has no gong in it at all. If it is the gong you want, this page tells you so early.
"Sound bath" is the format: you lie down and sustained instrumental sound is played around you for the best part of an hour. "Gong bath" names one version of that format, the one built around a gong. Every gong bath is a sound bath. Not every sound bath is a gong bath.
Mine is not. I play singing bowls. There is no gong in my sessions, and there is no point coming to one hoping for a gong you are not going to get.
How the two actually sound
A gong is big, dense and physical. One strike unfolds into layers of overtones that keep moving long after the hit, and people lying near it often say they feel the low frequencies as much as hear them.
Singing bowls sit higher and clearer. The tone is more sustained than dense, and the room stays more melodic. It is a gentler wash rather than a wave, and it is easier to follow a single note through it.
Neither is the better one. They are different instruments doing a similar job, and people genuinely prefer one over the other. That preference is worth knowing about yourself before you pay for an hour of the wrong one.
What is actually in my hour
This is the whole list, and it is the same list that is on my own ticket listing.
- White crystal singing bowls. Clear, sustained tones you feel as much as hear.
- Hand-played Tibetan bowls. Played live, by hand.
- Tingsha, chimes and complementary instruments. Small sounds that mark the edges of the hour.
No gong. If a session elsewhere is billed as a gong bath, that is a real difference in what you are buying, not a marketing word.
Which one should you go to?
If you want the big, physical, fills-the-whole-room version, look for a gong bath and go to that. I would rather tell you now than have you lie down in my room expecting one.
If you want something quieter and clearer, or it is your first one and a wall of sound does not sound restful, bowls are the gentler way in.
And if you have no idea, come to a bowl session first. It is the easier of the two to try.
If bowls are the ones you want
What to expect at a sound bath covers the hour itself, and the sound baths page has the dates and the price.
For a session at your own end, private, workplace and one-to-one sound baths explains how those work, and sound baths in Kent lists the towns I travel to.
